After failing to win any of the three major trophies last season, Carlo Ancelotti's era at Real Madrid came to an end, with the Italian manager leaving to take over Brazil's national team.

Ancelotti lifted the UEFA Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup in the 2024-25 campaign, but it ultimately proved to be a disappointing season as Los Blancos lost out to Barcelona in La Liga, Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup, while they also fell short in the Champions League.

Former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has been tasked with overseeing an improvement in the 2025-26 season, having taken over the reins following his successful time as Bayer Leverkusen head coach.

Los Blancos have managed to make four signings so far this summer, with their defence being strengthened by the additions of Dean Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alvaro Fernandez.

Real Madrid have also managed to win the race for Franco Mastantuono, although the Argentina international will not officially arrive at the club until the middle of August.

Alonso's side remain active in the market, and it could be a busy end to the transfer window, with a central midfielder wanted.

Dani Ceballos is currently being heavily linked with a move to Serie A, while there remains widespread speculation surrounding Rodrygo's future, with the Brazil international said to be unsettled at the club.

The start of their 2025-26 campaign is just around the corner, with their La Liga season kicking off against Osasuna on August 17.

Real Madrid had allegedly been hopeful of postponing that match, arguing that they will not have had long enough since the end of the Club World Cup, but the fixture is going ahead as planned for the moment.

Alonso will be aware of the size of the task facing him next season considering how impressive Barcelona were last term, and their 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals of the Club World Cup was not a good look.

Summer 2025 transfer window key dates

The 2025 summer transfer window officially opened on June 1 after FIFA granted special dispensation to allow clubs competing at the Club World Cup to sign players ahead of the new-look tournament. That exceptional registration period then closed on June 10, before the window reopens again on June 16. The transfer window will then close on September 1, and remain closed until January.
