Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez reportedly does not have a release clause in his contract, with Manchester United therefore needing to agree a price with their Premier League rivals if they wish to sign him this summer.
Man United continue to be credited with an interest in Martinez, as the Red Devils are said to be in the market for a new number one goalkeeper due to Andre Onana's struggles at Old Trafford.
Reports in Argentina had suggested that Martinez had a release clause of £21.6m in his contract.
However, according to the Daily Mail, there is no such buy-out fee, so Man United would need to come to an agreement with Villa over a transfer fee in order to sign the Argentina international.
Martinez has also been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League this summer, with the 32-year-old believed to be looking for a fresh challenge at this stage of his career.
Martinez 'does not have release clause' in Villa contract
The Argentine made the move to Villa Park from Arsenal in the summer of 2020, and he has represented his current side on 212 occasions, keeping 70 clean sheets in the process.
Martinez has developed into one of the best goalkeepers in world football during his time at Villa, and Man United are believed to view him as their leading target between the sticks this summer.
However, a switch to Old Trafford is far from certain, as selling Onana will be a difficult task.
Will Onana leave Man United this summer?
Onana is currently on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, and he will not be involved in Man United's opening pre-season friendly against Leeds United on Saturday afternoon.
However, the issue is said to be not as serious as first feared, with the Cameroon international expected to travel with the Red Devils squad to the United States for their pre-season tour.
Onana will miss the team's opening two tour matches against West Ham and Bournemouth, but he could return for the game with Everton in early August, which comes before a friendly with Fiorentina at Old Trafford.
The 29-year-old is said to be desperate to remain at Old Trafford and prove himself to head coach Ruben Amorim, but there is no getting away from the fact that his performances since arriving at Man United have been disappointing.
Man United's number two goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is also being linked with an exit, so it is possible that a new stopper will arrive this summer, but Onana could remain as the number one next term.
