Wolverhampton Wanderers reportedly identify Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou as a potential candidate to replace Bruno Lage, who was sacked by the club on Sunday.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly identified Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou as a potential candidate to replace Bruno Lage.

The West Midlands-based outfit announced on Sunday afternoon that they have parted company with Lage after 16 months in charge.

A 2-0 defeat away against West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday proved to be the final nail in the coffin for the Portuguese boss, who leaves Wolves inside the relegation zone with just six points from their first eight games.

Wolves chairman Jeff Shi stated that the club had "no choice but to act" due to the "team's form and performances over the last few months", which has seen them win only one of their last 15 league matches.

While coaches Steve Davis and James Collins prepare the team for next Saturday's Premier League trip to Chelsea, the club's hierarchy are drawing up a list of potential successors to Lage in the Molineux hotseat.

According to The Telegraph, Celtic boss Postecoglou has been 'discussed' as an option by the Wolves board, but there are doubts as to whether he would be willing to leave the Glaswegian giants midway through the season.

Postecoglou, who guided Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title and Scottish League Cup last season, has recently been linked with replacing Brendan Rodgers at Leicester City, amid their poor start to the campaign, while he has also been tipped to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool in the future.

However, the 57-year-old Australian insists that he is not considering a switch to the Premier League any time soon, telling Sky Sports News last week: "It's not really on my radar. I've said to my players and it's the same for me – if they do what they do well, all this other stuff takes care of itself, whatever their or my ambitions may be.

"My ambition has been the same wherever I've been – it's to be as successful as I can be. Right now I'm at a massive football club, living the dream and I am enjoying every minute of it.

"Anyone who has followed my career knows that I'm pretty big on playing the game a certain way. I've tried to do that wherever I've been against the backdrop of knowing I have to be successful.

"I've always tried to play football in a manner that I think excites supporters. Wherever I've been, the question has been 'will it work at the next level?' What I've tried to prove is that it does and it will.

"I am at a really massive football club. We're not playing in one of the high profile European leagues. But in terms of the club itself as an institution, we play in front of 60,000 people. We're in the Champions League, it's a massive club. By having success at Celtic, I'm proud that I'm getting noticed everywhere."

Celtic are believed to be keen to tie Postecoglou down to a new and improved contract, with his current deal at Parkhead due to expire in May 2023.

The Telegraph claims that Sevilla head coach Julen Lopetegui could also be targeted by Wolves, while Sporting Lisbon's Ruben Amorim and former Olympiacos boss Pedro Martins are currently the bookmakers' favourites to succeed Lage.
