Bournemouth looking to avoid setting new Premier League record against Newcastle United

Bournemouth will be looking to avoid setting a new Premier League record when they face Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.

Bournemouth will be attempting to avoid setting a new Premier League record when they play Newcastle United this weekend.

The Cherries have been in the headlines for numerous reasons in recent weeks, most notably due to sacking manager Scott Parker after just four games.

That decision came three days after a 9-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool at Anfield, equalling a Premier League record.

Since then, caretaker boss Gary O'Neil has more than steadied the ship, earning a goalless draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers before overseeing an astonishing 3-2 comeback triumph at Nottingham Forest.

After six matches, the South Coast outfit sit in 13th position in the standings with seven points, a solid return given the quality of the opposition that they faced.

However, Bournemouth have still conceded as many as 18 goals, ensuring that they currently possess the worst defensive record in the division despite keeping two clean sheets.

They are now in a position where they are looking to avoid becoming the first team to avoid conceding in excess of 21 strikes in their opening seven fixtures in Premier League history.

Only four teams have shipped 20 or more goals, the latest club to do so being Watford during the start of the 2019-20 campaign.

Derby County, in 2007-08, were the first team to reach the unwanted figure, while Southampton also conceded 20 times in 2012-13.

The current record is held by Bolton Wanderers, who saw their defences breached on 21 occasions at the beginning of 2011-12.

Leicester City have conceded 16 goals this season and must prevent Tottenham Hotspur from scoring at least four times in their fixture in North London.
