Preview: Borussia Dortmund vs. Sevilla - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's Champions League clash between Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Borussia Dortmund welcome Sevilla to Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday evening in what looks to be a crucial game for both sides in Champions League Group G.

Dortmund can guarantee qualification to the knockout round with a win, and Sevilla know that anything but a win will all but end their hopes of finishing second.

Dortmund come into this game on the back of an enthralling encounter against Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Bayern were 2-0 up thanks to goals from Leon Goretzka and Leroy Sane before Dortmund's late rally; Youssoufa Moukoko's neat finish brought his team back into the game before a dramatic injury-time equaliser from Anthony Modeste rescued a point for the home side.

In a tight Bundesliga table, it was an important point for Dortmund, who sit in fourth and just one point off the top of the league.

Edin Terzic's side are also faring well in Europe with six points from their opening three games, including their resounding 4-1 win away at Sevilla last time out.

Goals from Raphael Guerreiro, Jude Bellingham, Karim Adeyemi and Julian Brandt helped Dortmund to an impressive win, and now with home advantage against Sevilla they will be looking to guarantee qualification with a similar performance.

Sevilla sacked Julen Lopetegui after the 4-1 defeat to Dortmund and replaced him with Jorge Sampaoli, who had previously managed the club from 2016 to 2017.

His first game in charge was a 1-1 draw at home to Athletic Bilbao, which was an impressive result considering the form of the away side.

Oliver Torres scored early before Mikel Vesga equalised, but it certainly was a step in the right direction, as the draw lifted Sevilla from the relegation zone in La Liga.

Sevilla have been really disappointing both domestically and in Europe this season, but they are still favourites to finish third and qualify for the Europa League ahead of FC Copenhagen.

With players like Ivan Rakitic, Isco, Suso and Erik Lamela in their ranks, Sevilla certainly have the quality to kick on if Sampaoli can get the best out of his team.

Team News

Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus is taken off injured on September 17, 2022© Reuters

Dortmund have a host of concerns heading into this game, with Sebastien Haller, Mahmoud Dahoud, Marco Reus, Luca Unbehaun and Mateu Morey Bauza all ruled out.

Marius Wolf and Mats Hummels were unwell last week but both returned for the game against Bayern Munich, so should feature again here.

Gregor Kobel is also back from injury and will be pushing to reclaim his jersey ahead of backup goalkeeper Alexander Meyer.

For Sevilla, Marcao returned from injury against Athletic Bilbao and he will be looking to retain his place in the starting lineup.

Elsewhere, Karim Rekik and Tecatito are both sidelined through injury and Oliver Torres is ineligible for the away side.

It will be interesting to see how Sampaoli shakes things up, with Kasper Dolberg and Youssef En-Nesyri pushing for the starting berth in attack.

Borussia Dortmund possible starting lineup:
Meyer; Wolf, Sule, Schlotterbeck, Guerreiro; Can, Ozcan; Adeyemi, Bellingham, Brandt; Modeste

Sevilla possible starting lineup:
Bounou; Montiel, Nianzou, Marcao, Telles; Delaney, Gudelj; Lamela, Isco, Gomez; Dolberg

We say: Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Sevilla

Despite the chance of a new manager bounce, Dortmund are a formidable force at home in Europe. The home side also know that victory will guarantee their qualification to the knockout stage and this should be enough motivation to see them over the line.
