Argentina vs. Colombia: Predicted XI for World Cup qualifier as Lionel Messi makes return

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at how Argentina could line up against Colombia.

Argentina's Lionel Messi in action on November 19, 2024

Lionel Messi is anticipated to start for Argentina in Tuesday night’s World Cup 2026 qualifying match against Colombia at Estadio Mas Monumental.

The Albiceleste captain got nearly an hour off last time out before replacing Nico Paz after 57 minutes, but the Inter Miami forward should play from the off against La Tricolor, seeking to add to his six goals to stay atop the scoring charts.

Messi could start behind Julian Alvarez, match-winner against Chile, as Lionel Scaloni opts against exerting Lautaro Martinez, who only just returned from a thigh problem and looked unfit during Inter Milan's Champions League final humiliation against Paris Saint-Germain.

Although La Seleccion’s place in next year's global showpiece is assured, Scaloni could opt for the same team elsewhere. Giuliano Simeone and Thiago Almada, the latter of whom set up Alvaraz's strike against Chile, should retain their places on the flanks, while Exequiel Palacios and Rodrigo De Paul should play in a midfield pairing.

De Paul completed 99 of 104 passes in last week's 1-0 win in Chile, created two chances and his positive passing, highlighted by the midfield man's nine passes into the final third and the completion of six of eight attempted long-range passes, were standout facets against the two-time Copa America champions.

Palacios was not as positive in possession as De Paul, but the Bayer Leverkusen player made 10 recoveries and won five of six duels, demonstrating his effort and industry without possession.

Scaloni could resist making changes at the back, with Nahuel Molina and Nicolas Tagliafico flanking Cristian Romero and Leonardo Balerdi in defence, while Emiliano Martinez retains his spot in goal.

Argentina possible starting lineup:

Martinez; Molina, Romero, Balerdi, Tagliafico; De Paul, Palacios; Simeone, Messi, Almada; Alvarez
