Leo Fernandez suspended from snooker for 15 months after admitting corruption charge

Irish snooker player Leo Fernandez receives a 15-month ban from the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association after admitting corruption charges.

The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association has suspended Leo Fernandez for 15 months after he admitted a breach of anti-corruption regulations.

Ireland's Fernandez played the first foul shot of a World Championship qualifier against Gary Wilson in April, which the sport's ruling body deemed had enabled other people to profit by betting on it.

A statement from the WPBSA read: "At an early stage Leo Fernandez fully admitted his involvement in delivering the foul shot in the first frame of the match in question for other persons to make money through betting.

"As a condition of his sentence he has pledged to assist the WPBSA in its anti-corruption education work to try and help other players avoid being drawn into match manipulation.

"On Tuesday, July 5 the WPBSA Disciplinary Committee issued their decision on sanction - Leo Fernandez is suspended from the sport of snooker for a period of 15 months.

"The suspension will run from May 27, 2016, when the interim suspension was imposed by the WPBSA, therefore Leo Fernandez will not be eligible to participate in snooker before August 27, 2017."

In addition, Fernandez has also been ordered to pay £2,000 costs to the WPBSA after Tuesday's hearing.
