Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou has provided an update on Son Heung-min's contract situation ahead of the expiry of his current deal in 2026.

The Lilywhites recently exercised their option to extend Son's terms by a further 12 months, prior to which their captain could have left on a free transfer at the end of the current season.

Postecoglou explained that the club wanted to ensure that their captain did not leave without winning a trophy, having been starved of silverware since joining from Bayer Leverkusen almost a full decade ago.

Son could potentially lead Tottenham to Europa League glory next month, but the North London club are fighting an uphill battle to progress past Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals following a 1-1 draw in the first leg at home on Thursday.

The 2025-26 season may therefore be Son's last chance to finally win a major honour with Tottenham, unless he is rewarded with another contract extension, but he will be approaching his 34th birthday at the end of the next campaign.

Postecoglou insists Son deal will be addressed 'appropriately'

Asked ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers if there had been any update on Son's situation, Postecoglou replied: "Don't think so," as quoted by football.london.

"We triggered the extension. Apart from that, no. I think all those things we will address at the appropriate time. I don't think now is the time to look at that.

"Certainly at the end of the year there will be a point of review where we look at where we are as a squad and do some forward-planning – if I'm here, mate. And look at what next year looks like and beyond. I'm sure Sonny will be part of those discussions."

If Spurs do not tie Son down to a new deal, either this summer or next January would be their last chance to recoup a small portion of the £26.1m they paid Bayer Leverkusen for the South Korea international's signature in 2015.

Even though the 32-year-old has not won a single trophy in North London, he has arguably achieved legendary status with 173 goals and 96 assists in 451 appearances for the club over the past decade.

The case to offer Son a new Tottenham contract

The less said about Spurs' overall Premier League season the better, and Son has often been singled out for criticism in the 2024-25 campaign, but his attacking metrics are still right up there.

The 32-year-old has reached double figures in either goals or assists in each of the last nine Premier League campaigns, setting up 10 strikes in the tournament this season and also scoring a respectable seven goals of his own.

Son is also a brilliant mentor for the likes of Mikey Moore and Wilson Odobert to learn from, and it would be a shock if Spurs considered a summer sale regardless of his contract situation.

If the ex-Hamburg prospect can continue to perform at a high level and remain available in 2025-26, there is every chance that he will be offered another short-term extension, especially if Spurs end up trophyless again but show signs of progression.

However, as Tottenham would only garner a nominal fee through a sale now, there should be no uproar if he leaves on a free transfer following 11 years of service either.
