James Tavernier has expressed his delight after Rangers stunned Borussia Dortmund to win 4-2 in the first leg of their Europa League playoff tie in Germany.

The Gers captain opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 38th minute before Alfredo Morelos double the visitors' lead three minutes later with a close-range header at the far post.

A brilliant left-footed strike from edge of the box by John Lundstram made it 3-0 for the Gers four minutes after the break, but Jude Bellingham replied instantly when he fired one past Allan McGregor. However, an own goal from Dan-Axel Zagadou restored Rangers' three-goal lead.

Raphael Guerreiro then gave Dortmund a lifeline with a brilliant strike nine minutes from time, but the night belonged to Rangers who have come away with a memorable victory against the Bundesliga giants.

Speaking to BT Sport in his post-match interview, Tavernier said: "I'm really, really happy with the result. We know it's only halfway there but we can take the positives out of tonight.

"Obviously we're a little bit disappointing to concede the two goals because we put ourselves in a really good position, but overall we controlled the game the best we could and limited their chances and I thought we were really effective on the break and we got the goals so really happy."

Speaking in a separate interview for Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst said: "Very good results for us, against a very quality team, a big team in Europe.

"We wanted to take a result back to Glasgow, to get a good game for next week. I think we achieved that with two goals difference we take back. I'm really proud of the performance the players have shown today."

Rangers will face Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday before they prepare for the second leg against Dortmund at Ibrox next Thursday.
