Manchester United forward Mateo Mejia, who trained with the first team last season, signs a new contract at the club.

Manchester United forward Mateo Mejia has signed a new contract with the club.

The 20-year-old made the move to Old Trafford from Zaragoza in 2019, and he has represented the Red Devils on 21 occasions at youth and Under-23 level.

Mejia is yet to make a first-team appearance at Old Trafford, but he has now been handed another contract by the 20-time English champions.

"Mateo Mejia has signed a new contract with Manchester United. The young forward has agreed fresh terms with the Reds and will look to continue his progress at the club," read a statement on the club's official website.

"Mejia was one of 32 Academy players to join first-team training on occasion last season and will have benefited from working closely with the senior coaches and players. Congratulations to Mateo and we look forward to watching him in 2023/24."

Mejia, who scored twice in Premier League 2 during the 2022-23 campaign, was born in Spain, but he has represented Colombia at Under-20s level.

Man United are currently short of centre-forwards at senior level, with Wout Weghorst leaving the club following the expiration of his loan spell at Burnley.

There is also speculation surrounding the future of Anthony Martial, and his exit would leave Marcus Rashford as the only senior player with experience of playing as a striker on a regular basis.

The club are working to bring a new centre-forward to Old Trafford, with Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane, Napoli's Victor Osimhen and Eintracht Frankfurt's Randal Kolo Muani linked with moves to the Red Devils.

Mejia will be hoping to be involved in Man United's preparations for the 2023-24 season, with their pre-season campaign beginning against Leeds United on July 12.

The Red Devils will then take on Lyon, Arsenal, Wrexham, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Athletic Bilbao before starting their Premier League campaign against Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 14.

Mason Mount could become Man United's first signing of the summer, with the club allegedly preparing to meet with Chelsea over the next 24 hours to discuss the England international.

As well as a striker and a midfielder, a centre-back could arrive this summer, while a new goalkeeper will be required if David de Gea does not sign a new deal, with his current terms due to expire at the end of the month.
