Premier League Player of the Season: Mohamed Salah alternative nominated in non-unanimous vote

The Sports Mole team selects their Premier League Player of the Season for the 2024-25 campaign, and the vote is not unanimous.

The dust is now starting to settle on the 2024-25 Premier League season, one in which VAR and injuries inevitably stole the headlines, in addition to a few under-performing giants.

However, while Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Manchester United all floundered, Arne Slot's Liverpool flourished to reclaim the Premier League throne they had first inherited in 2020.

As the Reds stormed to the crown with as many as four games to spare, Slot's men unsurprisingly scooped a plethora of the end-of-season accolades, and Mohamed Salah was named the Player of the Season in the Sports Mole Readers' Awards.

But when it comes to our writers, the vote was not unanimous. Here, the Sports Mole team selects their Premier League Player of the Season for the 2024-25 campaign.

It couldn't really be anyone else. A number of players have had standout seasons for their clubs or personal careers this term, but for Salah's 2024-25 campaign we're talking about quite possibly the greatest individual campaign we have ever seen in the Premier League.

It looked for a long while as though he would shatter every record in the book and, while he has tailed off a little during the final weeks of the campaign with the title already wrapped up, he has still racked up the records in a way that very few have done before him.

Considering some were questioning him during an underwhelming end to last season, and him now being 32 years old, it has been a stunning surge to career-best form for the Egyptian King, whose exploits this term have catapulted him from his status as a Premier League legend to being firmly in the conversation for the division's greatest ever player.

He made himself utterly irreplaceable and integral to this Liverpool team once again to earn a new contract which, if he continues to perform at this level, could see him strengthen that GOAT case.

I like to go against the norm, and I'm offering up an alternative here.

In a very, very poor Man United side, Fernandes has been inspirational, coming up with eight goals and 11 assists in 36 Premier League appearances.

The Red Devils could have been relegated this season if it wasn't for Fernandes, with the Portugal international carrying the side for long spells, and it would be a disaster for the club if they lost him during this summer's transfer window.

The likes of Alexander Isak, Morgan Gibbs-White and Bryan Mbeumo all deserve special mentions, but it is difficult to look beyond Liverpool's Mohamed Salah for the Player of the Season award after leading the Reds to the Premier League title.

Described as "almost unhuman" by Arne Slot, the Egyptian King is the first player in PL history to finish a season with the most goals (29), the most assists (18) and also win the division's Player of the Season prize - a remarkable achievement.

Receiving more than 90% of the votes to also be crowned Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year emphasises just how impressive the prolific forward has been this season. Where would Liverpool be without him?

As a die-hard Arsenal fan, one of the few slices of joy I could take from the 2024-25 Premier League season was Salah not eclipsing Thierry Henry's 20 assists from the 2002-03 campaign.

However, this was a year where the electrifying Egyptian registered more goals and assists than any other player in a 38-game Premier League season, and equalled Andy Cole and Alan Shearer's record from a 42-game term. With all due respect to the other strong candidates, they did not even come into my thinking.

I suppose the only real fear is whether Salah's drop-off at the end of the season is a precursor to a sustained decline, but after a summer of sunbeds, I have no doubts that the 32-year-old will be terrorising defences for fun again in 2025-26.

Mohamed Salah was by far the best player in the Premier League this season, and the club and Arne Slot, in particular, will be grateful he wasn't sold for big money last summer to Saudi Arabia.

His goal involvements in the top flight were not only a league record, but more goals than Manchester United managed in the entire competition.

The expectations for him to step up were enormous, and every time he touched the ball, it looked like the Reds would score. In 2024-25, he looked fresher, playing in a more exclusive attacking role, threatening in central positions and out wide, and his versatility and skills are a big reason why Liverpool unseeded Manchester City as champions.

Nobody has come close to Salah in the Premier League this season, scoring 29 goals and registering 18 assists - the highest in both categories - as well as walking away with a league title; it has been a special campaign for the Egyptian who seems to just get better with age.

The Egyptian King enjoyed a standout campaign as he fired Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th Premier League title while racking up 29 goals and 18 assists along the way.

This brilliant individual display saw Mohamed Salah clinch the Golden Boot, joining Arsenal legend Thierry Henry as only two players to clinch the award in four different campaigns. Salah also picked up the Premier League Playmaker of the Season award and was voted EA SPORTS Player of the Season.

The 32-year-old has now won the PL Golden Boot and Playmaker awards in the same season for the second time, having finished with 23 goals and 13 assists in the 2021-22 campaign to win both honours.

Mohamed Salah has proved time and again that he is a top player, and his 29 goals were instrumental to helping his team win the title yet again.

This is undoubtedly Mohamed Salah, whose consistency in goalscoring and remarkable chance creation stood out in Liverpool's title-winning season.

While it looked uncertain heading into the final minutes of the campaign, emulating Alan Shearer and Andy Cole's feat of 47 goal contributions — in a 38-game season, no less — was exactly what the Reds superstar deserved after an outstanding individual season.

Winning the Premier League golden boot, playmaker award and hitting a record number of goal contributions in a campaign makes it difficult to consider anyone other than Liverpool's Mohamed Salah the 2024-25 Player of the Season.

Virgil van Dijk, Alisson and Alexis Mac Allister were also crucial in the Reds' success this term, but having contributed to more than half of the goals that the champions mustered, the Egyptian King stands out from the crowd.
