Liverpool have reportedly decided against pursuing a transfer for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
The Reds have been working hard to strengthen their squad this summer, recruiting Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman.
Liverpool have recently turned their focus to their search for a new striker, leading to links with Newcastle United marksman Alexander Isak.
However, they have decided to pursue a move for Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike after Newcastle insisted that Isak is not for sale.
Frankfurt head coach Dino Toppmoller appeared to confirm Ekitike's imminent departure when he was asked about the player's absence for the friendly with FSV Frankfurt.
Liverpool make Mateta decision
It has since been reported that Liverpool have reached a full agreement with Frankfurt over a deal worth €95m (£82.3m), including add-ons.
According to Football Insider, Liverpool's pursuit of Ekitike has influenced their decision about a potential move for Mateta.
The report claims that the Reds are 'unlikely' to pursue a move for Mateta despite recent speculation suggesting him as a possible target.
Mateta is said to be 'further down' Liverpool's transfer shortlist, and the expected arrival of Ekitike will effectively rule out any move for the Palace man this summer.
Could Mateta still leave Crystal Palace this summer?
The Frenchman has been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park after he enjoyed a successful 2024-25 season.
Mateta scored 17 goals in 46 competitive matches, including 14 strikes in 37 Premier League appearances for Oliver Glasner's side.
Liverpool may not be out of the running for Mateta's signature, but Palace may still face a battle to retain his services.
Manchester United and AC Milan have both been mooted as potential suitors for a player who is under contract until June 2027.
The Eagles will want to keep their star striker, especially as they are also at risk of losing other key players this summer, like Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze.
