Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton reportedly wants to stay at Selhurst Park for the 2025-26 season amid interest from Liverpool.
The Reds are choc-a-bloc with top-quality midfielders, but they do retain an interest in Wharton, who has excelled in the Premier League since moving from Blackburn Rovers in the January window of 2024.
The 21-year-old, who missed three months of action last season after a groin operation in November, is widely regarded as one of the top young talents in the country, and clubs such as Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have expressed interest in him.
According to a report from The Sun, Wharton has made a 'major decision' about staying at Palace, and that makes Liverpool favourites to land him next summer.
The Reds, however, could face strong competition from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur for Wharton, who still has more than four years left on his contract at Selhurst Park.
Liverpool would benefit from Wharton's decision
This is proving to be a massive transfer window for the Premier League champions, and they are not done yet.
The Reds have already broken their transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and are reportedly close to signing Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike in a big-money deal.
The tragic death of Diogo Jota could prompt them to buy new attackers, but the midfield areas are well-stocked at the moment.
The Reds are reportedly keen to sign Palace defender Marc Guehi, while talisman attacking midfielder Eberechi Eze is also being linked with a move away from the club. The Eagles do not want to lose Wharton, and the player's decision gives Liverpool enough time to launch an attack for him next summer.
Wharton could be a potential replacement for Wataru Endo
A recent report claimed that the Eagles would demand £100m to part ways with the England international before the transfer deadline.
They are unlikely to drop their asking price next summer, unless Wharton suffers a drastic loss in form or misses a chunk of the next season through injuries.
The former Blackburn midfielder is a 'classy passer' of the ball, and he is equally good at tackling, ball retention and interception.
Wataru Endo, 32, has proved to be an excellent squad player for the Reds, but Wharton will be a massive upgrade on him.
