Manchester City are reportedly monitoring Ian Maatsen's situation at Chelsea, as they weigh up a potential move.

Manchester City are reportedly monitoring Ian Maatsen's contract situation at Chelsea.

The full-back returned to Stamford Bridge at the end of last season after enjoying a successful loan spell with Burnley.

Maatsen featured in 39 Championship games for Vincent Kompany's side, chipping in with four goals and six assists.

After helping the Clarets win promotion to the Premier League, Maatsen was seemingly on the verge of completing a move back to Turf Moor on the final day of the summer transfer window.

Burnley reached an agreement with Chelsea over a season-long loan deal which included an obligation to buy Maatsen for £31.5m at the end of the season.

However, the Dutchman decided to turn down the deadline day move and remain part of Mauricio Pochettino's squad.

Despite opting to stay at Stamford Bridge, Maatsen's future in West London is far from certain, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

While Chelsea have indicated they want to agree a new long-term deal with Maatsen, his contract situation has alerted a number of clubs from across Europe.

According to 90min, reigning European champions Man City are among the sides keeping tabs on the left-sided defender.

The Premier League winners are still keen to sign a left-back after failing to do so during the summer transfer window.

While the likes of Nathan Ake, Josko Gvardiol and Rico Lewis are capable of operating on the left side of defence, Sergio Gomez is the only recognised left-back in Pep Guardiola's squad.

With Man City seemingly considering a future move for Maatsen, it remains to be seen whether he features heavily in Pochettino's plans for the 2023-24 campaign.

Maatsen has featured in three of Chelsea's four Premier League games this season, but all those appearances have come from the bench.

The 21-year-old's only start of the new season came in the 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon in the second round of the EFL Cup.
