Aston Villa reportedly determine whether they would be prepared to consider selling goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez during the summer transfer window.

Aston Villa have reportedly decided whether they will entertain any offers for Emiliano Martinez this summer.

In his near-five years in the West Midlands, Martinez has established himself as someone who is regarded as one of the top goalkeepers in world football.

That is largely due to his performance at the 2022 World Cup, yet the Argentina international has helped Villa enhance their reputation in the Premier League and on the European stage.

Martinez possesses a contract until 2029, seemingly indicating that there is every chance of an extended stay, but Villa's position with the relevant financial regulations may dictate otherwise.

If Villa need to facilitate a big-money sale, cashing in on Martinez may make sense, depending on what offers are made for players of similar stature.

What is Villa's Martinez stance?

According to the Daily Mail, Martinez is not viewed as indispensable by Villa's hierarchy.

The report suggests that Villa are open to selling the former Arsenal man if they are able to sign a younger alternative of similar ability.

Age is an issue with Villa's goalkeepers with deputy Robin Olsen 35 years of age. Younger alternatives such as Oliwier Zych, Joe Gauci and Filip Marschall are not viewed as realistic replacements for Martinez.

Villa have been linked with Espanyol stopper Joan Garcia in recent months and could plausibly make a bid for the Spaniard in the summer.

As per reports, it appears that Villa would need to commit to a £25m deal to secure Garcia's signature, the 24-year-old having a release clause in his contract.

A necessary decision?

While Unai Emery would realistically prefer to retain Martinez's services, he may recognise that selling the veteran goalkeeper could prove more beneficial than seeing another high-profile player leave.

The report suggests that Villa face a similar transfer window as last summer's equivalent, seemingly in a constant battle to comply with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability regulations.

Getting Martinez off the wage bill would also be beneficial from that standpoint, Garcia likely to command a far lower wage at this point of his career.
