Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira lays the blame on the Gunners for his failure to make the Uruguay squad for September's World Cup qualifiers.

Lucas Torreira has taken a swipe at parent club Arsenal for 'costing' him a place in Uruguay's squad for September's World Cup qualifiers.

The 25-year-old quickly endeared himself to the Emirates faithful upon his arrival in 2018, starting 24 Premier League games in the 2018-19 season under Unai Emery.

However, Torreira fell out of favour under Mikel Arteta and also endured an ill-fated loan spell at Atletico Madrid last term before joining Fiorentina for the 2021-22 season.

The midfielder did not earn a call-up to the Uruguay squad for the latest round of fixtures and has pointed the finger at Arsenal, telling Teledoce: "I want to play as much as possible and help Fiorentina this season. We must continue like this.

"Now, I will continue with a great desire to work, grow and make myself available to the manager to be ready. At Arsenal, I had little continuity of late, which also cost me the call-up to the Uruguay national team in the last chunk of the World Cup qualifiers.

"With a cool head, maybe it was better this way because I had more time to work at Fiorentina and to fit into the manager's plans."

Torreira has forced his way back into the national team for October's games, but he has only featured in one of Fiorentina's four Serie A games so far this season.
