Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly in the early stages of negotiations over a new long-term contract for one of the key members of Ange Postecoglou's squad.

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly opened talks with Rodrigo Bentancur over a new contract.

Bentancur is closing in on a century of Tottenham appearances, having featured in 97 competitive matches since joining the club from Juventus in January 2022.

The Uruguayan has struggled with injury issues at times during his time in North London, including in 2023 when he missed six months of action due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Bentancur has largely stayed injury-free this season, although he missed seven domestic matches before Christmas after being suspended for a racist remark that he made about teammate Son Heung-min.

The 27-year-old has been a regular fixture since serving the ban, with the midfielder regarded as a key player in Ange Postecoglou's squad.

Tottenham open Bentancur contract talks

Uruguay international Bentancur has made a total of 28 competitive appearances this season, contributing with two goals and one assist.

There is perhaps some uncertainty about his long-term future at the club, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 season.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Spurs are taking steps to quash any speculation about his future by opening talks over a new contract.

The report claims that Tottenham are keen to extend Bentancur's deal due to the fact that he is an 'integral first-team player'.

As it stands, talks between the two parties are at an early stage, meaning that there is still some way to go to finalise a new deal.

Tottenham are set to hold more meetings with Bentancur's camp in the coming weeks, with the North London club determined to secure his long-term future

Who else is nearing the end of their contract?

While Bentancur's deal expires in 2025, four Tottenham players will be out of contract at the end of the current season.

Goalkeepers Fraser Forster and Alfie Whiteman are in the last six months of their respective deals, while Sergio Reguilon's contract is also set to expire at the end of June.

Ben Davies is the fourth member of the squad who will be out of contract in the summer, although Tottenham are said to have the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months.

Meanwhile, Son and Yves Bissouma are currently in the same situation as Bentancur, having entered the final 18 months of their respective contracts.
