Ange Postecoglou shows ruthless side as Tottenham announce Europa League knockout squad

Cold cut and January omission: Tottenham confirm Europa League knockout squad

Tottenham Hotspur confirm their Europa League squad for the knockout stage of the competition, as one January signing is omitted from the selection.

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed their squad for the knockout stages of the Europa League, where Ange Postecoglou has made three changes to List A.

The Lilywhites booked their spot in the last 16 of the competition courtesy of a fourth-placed finish in the 36-team league phase, taking 17 points from a possible 24 to finish behind Lazio, Athletic Bilbao and Manchester United.

A 3-0 win over Swedish outfit Elfsborg on the final day assured Spurs of a place in the last 16 without the need for a two-legged playoff, and they will face one of AZ Alkmaar, Galatasaray, Real Sociedad or Midtjylland in the next stage.

Spurs were permitted to make three changes to their Europa League squad from the first phase of the competition, and Postecoglou has indeed swapped out a trio of players for a fresh batch.

Two of Tottenham's January signings - Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel - have been added to Spurs' List A, while rejuvenated right-back Djed Spence has also been selected for the knockout rounds.

However, Spence, Danso and Tel being included in the squad means that there is no place in the selection for fellow new arrival Antonin Kinsky, who will therefore not be eligible to feature for Tottenham for the rest of the competition.

Nevertheless, Postecoglou has seen fit to sacrifice one goalkeeper from the squad in the shape of Fraser Forster, as Guglielmo Vicario, Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman are all part of the selection.

Forster drops out alongside Radu Dragusin - who will miss the rest of the season with the ACL injury he suffered in the recent win over Elfsborg - and on-loan RB Leipzig winger Timo Werner.

Werner is expected back from a calf problem within the next couple of weeks, but he has flattered to deceive in a Tottenham shirt since rejoining last summer and was memorably the subject of a scathing review from Postecoglou after their 1-1 draw with Rangers.

Tottenham are not expected to exercise their option to sign Werner permanently at the end of the season, and his omission from the club's knockout squad is another indicator of how little trust Postecoglou has in him.

Richarlison, James Maddison, Destiny Udogie, Cristian Romero, Brennan Johnson, Micky van de Ven and Dominic Solanke are also out injured at present, but all seven have kept their places in the squad.

Mikey Moore is a notable absentee from List A, but the teenager's age means that he can be included on List B alongside fellow youngsters Damola Ajayi and Dane Scarlett, both of whom also scored in the beating of Elfsborg.
