Roma, Feyenoord play out draw

Roma are held to a 1-1 draw by Feyenoord in Thursday evening's Europa League round-of-32 first-leg clash at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma have been held to a 1-1 draw by Feyenoord in this evening's Europa League round-of-32 first-leg clash at the Stadio Olimpico.

The visitors were first to threaten as Luke Wilkshire lashed a cross into the Giallorossi box, but Colin Kazim-Richards's header was skied high above goal.

However, the hosts came surging back with dangerous efforts from Gervinho and Daniele Verde, as the evergreen Francesco Totti pulled the strings in midfield.

In the 20th minute, Roma duly got themselves in front, Vasilis Torosidis sending a low cut-back into the Feyenoord goal, where the veteran Ivory Coast striker was at hand to back-heel the ball into the net.

Fred Rutten's charges came back strongly after going a goal down, with Karim El Ehmadi and Lex Immers coming close, but they were unable to get themselves onto the scoresheet by the end of the first half.

After the restart, Roma pressed forward but found themselves exposed at the back, which helped Feyenoord level proceedings not long before the hour.

Some lacklustre defending from the hosts allowed Immers to bear down on goal and smash a header against the woodwork, with Kazim-Richards at hand to sweep up the rebound and fire home.

Midway through the second half, the Dutch giants could have doubled the lead through a venomous Jens Toornstra free kick, but Lukasz Skorupski did just enough to tip the effort wide.

By the latter stages of the game, Feyenoord were rampant and were arguably unlucky not to secure a win at the Olimpico, with the tie on a knife edge going into the second leg in Rotterdam next Thursday.
