For the second straight season, Middlesbrough failed to reach the playoffs, finishing in 10th place during their disappointing 2024-25 Championship campaign.
Despite his impressive start and promise as a young manager, head-coach Michael Carrick was dismissed in early June after two-and-a-half years at the Riverside Stadium, and has since been replaced by Rob Edwards.
The 42-year-old is back in work for the first time since leaving his position as Luton Town manager by mutual agreement in January.
Edwards' time at Luton may have ended in disappointment, but he etched his name in the club's history by guiding them to promotion in 2022-23, via the Championship playoffs.
The new Boro boss will be looking to repeat that success at the Riverside Stadium, although he will need reinforcements if his team are to mount a serious promotion challenge.
Middlesbrough are still waiting to make their first signing of the summer, and they will be desperate to change that before the new season gets underway next month.
