Yet another new era is upon Southampton supporters, who witnessed Russell Martin and Simon Rusk join forces to just about prevent the Saints from setting the most shameful Premier League record in the 2024-25 campaign.

For a long while, the South Coast side were at a serious risk of becoming the worst team to ever grace the competition, only to eventually overtake Derby County's record-low points total of 11 from the 2007-08 season.

With pre-season about to get underway, new manager Will Still - formerly of Lens and Reims in Ligue 1 - has been getting to know his group of players, one that has only welcomed the one new face so far in Joshua Quarshie.

It has been anything but quiet on the outgoings front, though, as the Saints garnered a healthy £18m sum by selling Kamaldeen Sulemana to Atalanta BC, allowed Paul Onuachu to join Trabzonspor, saw Kyle Walker-Peters leave at the end of his contract and bade farewell to the retiring Adam Lallana.

Southampton will naturally be among the favourites to win the Championship next season, with Ipswich Town and Leicester City also looking for an immediate return to the top flight.

There will be more incomings before the transfer window closes, while there will also be further exits, as Still looks to put together a squad capable of challenging for promotion back to the Premier League.

Southampton's 2025-26 Championship campaign will begin with a clash against Wrexham on August 9, and that is shaping up to be a blockbuster clash considering what the Welsh side have achieved of late.

The Saints will then take on Ipswich, Stoke City and Watford before the end of the month; their first match in September, meanwhile, is the small matter of a clash with bitter rivals Portsmouth.

The new season is now just around the corner, and it will be fascinating to see what Southampton can achieve during the 2025-26 campaign.
