Atletico Madrid are reportedly interested in signing Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez in the summer transfer window.
The 23-year-old joined Pep Guardiola's side during the 2025 January transfer window for a fee of around £50m, but he is already facing an uncertain future.
Gonzalez was brought into the side mainly as a cover for Rodri, who missed the majority of the 2024-25 season after undergoing surgery. The Spaniard made 11 appearances for Man City last season, with most of them coming from the bench.
According to a report from Fichajes, Atletico have discussed internally about signing the Galician midfielder. The Rojiblancos want to sign him on loan with an option to buy him permanently next summer.
Diego Simeone believes that Gonzalez would be a perfect signing for his side because of his quality and dynamism, although securing his signature will not be straightforward.
Will Man City be tempted to sell Gonzalez?
Gonzalez failed to make an impact under Guardiola, and he could struggle to get regular games next season with Rodri now back in the side.
The holding midfielder managed just 61 minutes of action during the FIFA Club World Cup, and he could further drop down the pecking order after Man City signed Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders.
There has been reported interest in the midfielder from Saudi Pro League clubs, and now Atletico seem to have joined the race.
Gonzalez has a contract at the Etihad Stadium until 2029, but he could be shown the exit door, with Guardiola looking to offload as many as 11 players this summer.
Who else could leave Man City?
The Man City boss reportedly wishes for a smaller squad, and he is even willing to offload senior players like John Stones.
Ilkay Gundogan, Nico O’Reilly, Mateo Kovacic, Claudio Echeverri and Oscar Bobb could also depart, while Jack Grealish is more or less certain to move elsewhere this summer.
If Gonzalez leaves the club, questions will be raised about City's recruitment policy. Guardiola failed to get the best out of Kalvin Phillips, who spent two loan spells in the past 18 months, and a similar trend could follow with the former Porto midfielder.
