Former Manchester United forward Teddy Sheringham says that Marcus Rashford 'does not deserve' to make the move to Barcelona this summer.

Former Manchester United forward Teddy Sheringham has said that Marcus Rashford 'does not deserve' to make the move to Barcelona during this summer's transfer window.

Barcelona are exploring the possibility of signing Rashford this summer, with the England international, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, set to leave Old Trafford.

Rashford fell out with Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim in the first half of last season, with the Portuguese critical of the academy product's attitude and commitment to the cause.

Sheringham has called the whole saga "very soul-destroying", with the former Man United forward questioning Rashford's behaviour after making it to the top at Old Trafford.

Sheringham hits out at Man United's Rashford over conduct

"If you assess where Marcus Rashford is at as a professional footballer, you strive as a youngster to get to the very top and play for clubs like Manchester United, and when you're there, you appreciate it," Sheringham told Sky Bet.

"You don't throw it away and say you want to leave. I find the whole episode very soul-destroying, compared to the way I was back in the day and how I strove to get the privilege to play for such a huge football club.

"To hear someone talking the way he is talking, saying he wants out – I didn't like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doing that at Arsenal, I thought it was soul-destroying, and I hope Rashford doesn't get the move that he's hankering for.

"From my perspective, if you go from Manchester United to Barcelona, that's a step up that he hasn't deserved."

Liverpool 'showing an interest' in Rashford

Rashford is believed to be desperate to secure a move to Barcelona this summer, but there have also been reports of interest from Liverpool, as the Reds look to bring in a forward.

Phil Chisnall is the last player to have been directly transferred between the two clubs, scoring 10 times in 47 appearances for Man United before joining Liverpool in 1964.

Tom Chorlton, Jackie Sheldon, Tom Miller, Fred Hopkin, Tommy Reid, Ted Savage, Allenby Chilton and Thomas McNulty are the other eight players to have made the move between the two bitter rivals.

It is incredibly difficult to imagine Rashford joining Liverpool, and it would go down as one of the most controversial deals in the history of football should it occur.

Rashford has scored 138 times in 426 appearances for the Red Devils, in addition to contributing 77 assists, and he is currently training away from the first team at Old Trafford amid the speculation surrounding his future.
