Lionel Messi's record vs. Manchester City

Ahead of Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League clash with Manchester City, Sports Mole takes a look at Lionel Messi's record against Pep Guardiola's side.

Paris Saint-Germain will aim to make it back-to-back wins over Manchester City during Wednesday's Champions League battle at the Etihad Stadium.

Les Parisiens sunk Pep Guardiola's side 2-0 during their battle in the French capital two months ago, during which Lionel Messi scored his first goal for the club in some style.

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner also netted for the first time in Ligue 1 against Nantes at the weekend and has developed a knack for goalscoring against the Sky Blues.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at Messi's record against Man City ahead of Wednesday's showdown.

City's rapid rise to a club of Champions League calibre meant that Messi did not face the Sky Blues until the 2013-14 Champions League last-16, where he scored twice over the two legs to see Barcelona to a comfortable 4-1 aggregate success.

The two clubs reconvened at the same stage one year later, but Messi would fail to score over that 180 minutes of football - although he did provide the assist for Ivan Rakitic's second-leg winner - as Barca advanced 3-1 on aggregate en route to the trophy.

City and Barcelona would lock horns in the group stage of the 2016-17 tournament during Pep Guardiola's first season in charge, and Messi gave his former manager a harsh welcome back as he single-handedly demolished the Premier League giants at Camp Nou.

The Argentine scored three of his side's goals in a 4-0 success - also providing the assist for Neymar's strike in the dying embers - which is some feat considering that he had only just returned from injury.

The return fixture at the Etihad was a less joyous affair for Messi as Barcelona went down 3-1 on the day - although he did captain the side and score their consolation - and he would not meet City again in Catalan colours.

Having swapped La Liga for Ligue 1, Messi endured a slow start to life at PSG but showed that he had not lost his magic touch during the English champions' visit to Paris two months ago, as he combined well with Kylian Mbappe before firing home his first goal for the club in some style during a routine 2-0 win.

In total, Messi has won six and lost one of his seven games against Man City and boasts nine goal contributions (seven strikes, two assists) during that hot streak.

The 34-year-old's seven goal haul against City is the second highest against an English club in the Champions League - only beaten by his nine strikes against Arsenal - so Guardiola would do well to formulate a master plan to halt his former star man.
