Everton vs. Ipswich Town: Head-to-head record and past meetings

Ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash between Everton and Ipswich, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.

Everton and Ipswich Town will go head-to-head in the Premier League at Goodison Park for the final time on Saturday afternoon.

This is the first meeting between the two on Merseyside in over 20 years, and it may well be the last for the foreseeable future, after Ipswich had their relegation confirmed last weekend.

Everton comfortably ensured their survival thanks to the upturn in form they enjoyed following the return of David Moyes, who will now face the Tractor Boys for the first time in the Toffees' dugout.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

A fixture that has only ever been played in the top flight, modern-day meetings between Everton and Ipswich have been few and far between, due to the Tractor Boys' struggles in the lower divisions.

However, during the second half of the 20th century, the two crossed paths quite frequently, and Everton were dominant from the beginning, after winning the first meeting in the third round of the FA Cup in 1953.

The Toffees lost just one of the first 19 head-to-heads between the clubs, with the first league meeting coming in the early 1960s.

Between 1974 and 1983 though, Ipswich fared much better, losing just five of the 22 meetings between the sides in that spell, while also enduring just two defeats in seven at Goodison Park in the late-70s/early-80s.

Ipswich even held Everton at Goodison Park during their title-winning campaign in 1984-85, but the Toffees got the better of them at Portman Road in the league, and in an FA Cup quarter-final replay, with Graeme Sharp netting the late winner as they reached the final that year.

The East Anglian club returned to the top flight for the first three seasons of the newly-formed Premier League, but despite beating Everton in their first encounter in 1992, they won none of the following five before their relegation, losing four.

Under George Burley, they were promoted again in 2000, and gave Everton all sorts of problems, like when Marcus Stewart's brace helped them to a stunning 3-0 win at Goodison on their way to qualifying for the UEFA Cup.

Ipswich completed the league double over Everton that season, and took four points off them in 2001-02 too, but that was not enough for them to avoid a swift return to the second tier following a huge fall off from the season prior.

It took Ipswich 22 years to return to the Premier League, but once again, they were instantly relegated, with poor home form being costly throughout the campaign, such as losing 2-0 at Portman Road to Everton, who earned a rare away league win thanks to goals from Iliman Ndiaye and Michael Keane.
