England remain top thanks to goalless draw

England secure a vital point in their quest for World Cup qualification by playing out a goalless draw with Ukraine in Kiev.

England have secured a point to stay top of Group H by drawing 0-0 with Ukraine in Kiev.

Ukraine started the better of the two sides but it was Theo Walcott who threatened to open the scoring for the visitors early on when he was denied by a brave stop from Andriy Pyatov.

Following a few nervous moments in the early stages, the England defence started to become more comfortable as the first half progressed.

Steven Gerrard was close to opening the scoring midway through the first period but his effort from outside the area flew just over the crossbar.

Ukraine returned after the break with a confident mindset but they struggled to create the clear opportunity which would have punished the visitors, who had started the second half slowly.

Chances continued to prove hard to come by but the hosts should have been ahead in the 75th minute when Artem Fedetskiy found himself in plenty of space, but his weak header was easily saved by Joe Hart.

It was the home side that looked most eager to find a late winner but England could have stolen the three points when Walcott flicked the ball past the post with an optimistic effort late on.

Frank Lampard had England's best chance of the night in stoppage time but he failed to celebrate his 100th cap with a goal as he headed wide from close range, meaning England had to settle for a point.
