Preview: Scotland vs. England - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's friendly clash between Scotland and England, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

The 150th Anniversary of the oldest international fixture in football will be celebrated on Tuesday, with Scotland taking on England in a glamour friendly at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

These two nations first locked horns in 1872 at the West of Scotland Cricket Club ground, playing out a goalless draw, and the rivals will now face off in a celebration of that contest on Tuesday night.

Scotland have been excellent in their qualification campaign for Euro 2024, picking up five straight wins in Group A to head the section, some nine points clear of second-placed Spain, although La Roja have two games in hand.

Steve Clarke's side started their qualification campaign with back-to-back home wins over Cyprus and Spain before recording a 2-1 victory away to Norway to move onto nine points.

Scotland then beat Georgia 2-0 on June 20 before returning to action away to Cyprus on Friday evening, recording a 3-0 victory in their fifth match in the section.

Clarke's team are in a strong position to qualify for Euro 2024, which would make it back-to-back European Championships, having also competed at Euro 2020, failing to make it out of the group stage.

Scotland have won 41 and lost 48 of their previous contests with England, while the last two meetings between the two sides have been draws, including a 0-0 at Euro 2020, and Clarke has promised that the match "will be serious" for his team despite it being a friendly.

England, meanwhile, will enter the match off the back of a 1-1 draw with Ukraine on Saturday; Oleksandr Zinchenko sent Ukraine ahead in the 26th minute of the contest before Kyle Walker levelled the scores late in the first period.

The Three Lions no longer have a perfect record in their Euro 2024 qualification group, but they are still comfortable at the top of Group C, six points clear of second-placed Ukraine and nine ahead of third-placed Italy, who have two games in hand.

England famously made the final of Euro 2020, losing to Italy on penalties, and the national side will be expected to advance deep into next summer's tournament, providing that they qualify.

Gareth Southgate's side found it difficult to make a serious impression at the 2022 World Cup, though, being eliminated in the quarter-finals of the competition.

England now have two friendlies against Scotland and Australia before returning to competitive action at home to Italy in the middle of October, and the Three Lions have won each of their last 10 friendlies, including a 3-0 success over the Ivory Coast in their last non-competitive contest back in March.

Team News

Scotland have not reported any injury concerns from their 3-0 win over Cyprus last time out, and Clarke is expected to again select a strong team for Tuesday's contest.

It seems likely that there will be some changes, though, with Nathan Patterson potentially coming into the team as the right-sided wing-back, while Stuart Armstrong could feature in midfield.

There might also be a position in the final third for Lyndon Dykes, but there should again be starts for the likes of John McGinn, Kieran Tierney, Scott McTominay and Andrew Robertson.

McTominay has scored six goals in his last five appearances for Scotland, and he could come up against a couple of Manchester United teammates on Tuesday night.

England boss Southgate, meanwhile, is also expected to make changes, with Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden potentially coming into the attack alongside Harry Kane.

There could also be a spot for Conor Gallagher in central midfield, while Levi Colwill is in line for an international debut in the middle of the back four.

Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson and Eberechi Eze will also be among those in contention to play some part in the glamour friendly contest.

Southgate is expected to resist the temptation to completely shuffle his pack, though, as there would be more negativity surrounding the national side if they were to lose on Tuesday following the disappointing performance against Ukraine.

Scotland possible starting lineup:
Gunn; Porteous, Hendry, Tierney; Patterson, S Armstrong, McGregor, Robertson; McTominay, McGinn; Dykes

England possible starting lineup:
Pickford; Walker, Maguire, Colwill, Chilwell; Gallagher, Rice, Bellingham; Foden, Kane, Rashford

We say: Scotland 2-2 England

Scotland are flying at the moment, and it is set to be a brilliant atmosphere inside the stadium on Tuesday evening. Both managers will make alterations, which should create an open and entertaining contest, and we are predicting a 2-2 draw in this international friendly.
