Wolverhampton Wanderers will reportedly hand a trial to former Chelsea forward Diego Costa as they react to the ACL injury sustained by Sasa Kalajdzic.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly decided to hand a trial to former Chelsea forward Diego Costa.

Earlier this week, Wolves spent in excess of £15m to sign Sasa Kalajdzic from Stuttgart, the Austria international regarded as the missing piece in Bruno Lage's attack.

However, Kalajdzic lasted just 45 minutes on his debut against Southampton before being withdrawn with a knee injury.

Although head coach Bruno Lage initially played down the severity of the injury, Wolves announced on Sunday that their new arrival had sustained an ACL injury.

With Kalajdzic expected to be absent until next year, The Athletic claims that the West Midlands outfit are considering signing Costa on a free transfer.

Costa has been without a club since his release from Atletico Mineiro at the beginning of 2022 having failed to secure a move during the summer window.

During 2021, the 33-year-old contributed five goals and one assist from 19 appearances, playing a total of 953 minutes.

Given his time without competitive action, Wolves' initial plan is to start working with Costa from Tuesday onwards to assess whether he could have a part to play up until the January transfer window.

Wolves play Liverpool and Manchester City in their next two Premier League fixtures, and it is highly unlikely that Lage would consider signing Costa before those games.

While Costa's career has recently tailed off, the former Spain international boasts a hugely impressive strike-rate in the Premier League.

During his time at Chelsea between July 2014 and September 2017, Costa contributed 52 goals and 18 assists from 89 appearances in England's top flight.

Costa helped the Blues win Premier League titles in 2014-15 and 2016-17, also collecting an EFL Cup winners' medal while he was at Stamford Bridge.

Since then, however, Costa has not scored more than seven goals in a single season, something which Wolves may consider when contemplating how to replace Kalajdzic.
