Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Paul Miller says that with time, Andre Villas-Boas could have done a good job at Chelsea.

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Paul Miller has insisted that Andre Villas-Boas' appointment as Chelsea manager came too soon in his career.

The former FC Porto boss took over at Stamford Bridge last summer having won multiple titles in a short spell in Portugal. However, He only lasted till March 2012 at the Blues, and Miller believes that Villas-Boas needed to be given more time to improve.

"Chelsea have never appointed a mug, someone who couldn't manage. They would have done their homework thoroughly," Miller told talkSPORT.

"Chelsea had a massive rebuilding job to do though when he took over and he always said it was a 2-3-year project.

"Because of his lack of experience he tried to do it too quickly, and upset some very senior players. When the players aren't happy and they don't want to play for you then it doesn't matter who's in charge, you don't win."

Villas-Boas was appointed as the new Spurs boss on Tuesday.
