Preview: Oldham Athletic vs. Burnley - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Pre-Season Friendlies clash between Oldham Athletic and Burnley, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Burnley continue their pre-season preparations with a friendly against Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Clarets are technically in action for the third time this summer, while Oldham are playing for the fourth time ahead of the start of the new League Two season.

Burnley made a positive start to their pre-season programme with a 4-0 win over Salford City and a 2-1 victory against Morecambe last weekend.

The games were scheduled at the same time at Burnley's Barnfield Training Centre, allowing Sean Dyche an opportunity to give each of his available players some minutes.

Jay Rodriguez and Josh Brownhill both netted twice in the routine win against Salford, while Ashley Barnes and Johann Berg Gudmundsson were on target against Morecambe.

Summer signing Nathan Collins was handed his debut last weekend, but there was no Chris Wood and Matej Vydra due to international commitments.

The signing of defender Collins from Stoke City for £12m is the only outfield arrival for the Clarets so far this summer, though Dyche is hopeful of more business being completed.

This clash with Oldham in their first public friendly of the summer should provide Burnley with a difficult test.

The Latics avoided League Two relegation last term and have won two of their three summer friendlies, beating Ashton United and Stalybridge Celtic before losing to Wigan Athletic.

Gwion Edwards and former Latics loanee Callum Lang gave Wigan an early two-goal lead and Oldham could not fully recover, despite Hallam Hope pulling a goal back before half time.

Hope was making his first appearance for the club since arriving from Swindon Town - one of five free signing made by Keith Curle's men during the off-season.

Like their opponents, Oldham only have three friendlies to play before beginning their league campaign, but fitness will of course take priority over the result this weekend.

Team News

Having named two separate sides for last week's behind-closed-doors friendlies, Dyche is expected to field a mixed XI of experienced pros and fringe players against Oldham.

Rodriguez and Barnes opened their pre-season accounts in those previously friendlies and may be paired together here in the absence of Vydra and Wood.

Goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey will be after some minutes following his arrival on a free contract this week, though his debut may arrive as a second-half substitute.

As for the hosts, they used seven trialists in their defeat to Wigan. It remains to be seen how many of those players will again be considered for selection against Burnley.

Curle is expected to use Hope from the start for the second game running, while fellow new recruit Sam Hart is pushing for inclusion after being used as a substitute last time out.

Oldham Athletic possible starting lineup:
Leutwiler; McGahey, Piergianni, Jameson, Hart; Whelan, Adams, Bahamboula, Keillor-Dunn; Luamba, Hope

Burnley possible starting lineup:
Peacock-Farrell; Lowton, Collins, Tarkowski, Taylor; Thompson, Brownhill, Cork, McNeil; Barnes, Rodriguez

We say: Oldham Athletic 1-3 Burnley

The scoreline is never the most important aspect of pre-season friendlies, but Dyche will still want to see a positive display from his side at Boundary Park.

Oldham will be excited to play in front of their own supporters again and should give the Clarets a test, though we expect the Clarets' quality to eventually shine through.
