Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte admits that his side are "too emotional" after Wednesday's 3-2 defeat to Southampton in the Premier League.

Antonio Conte has admitted that his Tottenham Hotspur side are "too emotional" after Wednesday's 3-2 Premier League loss to Southampton.

The Lilywhites were under the cosh for much of the encounter and went into half time at 1-1 as Armando Broja's strike cancelled out Jan Bednarek's own goal, but Southampton were carving Conte's men open left right and centre.

Spurs eventually regained the lead through Son Heung-min before Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams's headers turned the game on its head, as Steven Bergwijn saw a late equaliser ruled out for offside by VAR.

After witnessing his side fail to capitalise on Manchester United's dropped points, Conte told reporters: "We made many mistakes in the first half, important mistakes. In the second half we did well, scored and then we have to be better to defend," as quoted by football.london.

"I know very well we are going to struggle to get three points. I said this before, I continue to repeat. Now we are improving in many aspects, but we are still too emotional.

"We have to improve because if we want to grow as a team and try to be competitive, the first thing you have to improve is to be stable, not be up and down.

"This is a situation we have to improve. Also, I repeat, in a team it is important to have a team with experience and manage the game. It was a pity because my players they have 120%. The effort was maximum, I cannot say I didn't see the right commitment. I have seen the maximum commitment."

Spurs' second Premier League defeat on the bounce leaves them seventh in the table - level on points with Arsenal and four behind fourth-placed West Ham United with three games in hand.
