Sheffield Wednesday head into the 2025-26 Championship season under a cloud of uncertainty, facing one of the most turbulent periods in their recent history.

The club has been hit with a three-window transfer fee ban by the EFL, running until January 2027, after repeated breaches of regulations, including failure to pay player wages in three of the past four months.

A points deduction to start the season is also expected, while the situation surrounding current manager Danny Rohl hangs in the balance.

The German manager had made his wishes to leave this summer very clear, even missing the beginning of their pre-season, and although he later returned and held clear-the-air talks, his future at the club next season is still uncertain.

Key players like Djeidi Gassama have left the club as owner Dejphon Chansiri looked for fresh investment, while a whole host of players have left the club for free after Sheffield Wednesday failed to pay them for the months of May and June.

With several players departing on free transfers and no new signings brought in, the Owls are left relying on their academy to plug the gaps.

Youngsters Ernie Weaver, Logan Stretch, Joe Emery, George Brown and Rio Shipston have all signed pro terms ahead of a daunting opening fixture away to Leicester City on August 9.
