Former Manchester United centre-back Jaap Stam says that he would be open to returning to Old Trafford this summer as a coach.

Former Manchester United centre-back Jaap Stam has revealed that he would be open to returning to Old Trafford this summer as a coach.

Ajax manager Erik ten Hag remains the favourite to replace Ralf Rangnick at the helm, and there have been claims that a former Man United player could be a part of the Dutchman's staff.

Stam is allegedly in the frame for a role with his former club, and the 49-year-old has said that he would be keen to return to Manchester in a coaching role.

"If they (Manchester United) would ask me (to take a coaching/managerial role), I would do it straight away without a doubt. You know United is my life as well. I've had great seasons over there, won trophies and it's been very important for me," Stam told Betting Expert.

"In any way, if I could help them out, I would be tempted to do it. I know they are probably not going to come and call me, but also in a different role, and that counts I think for every player who has played for United.

"I think everyone is very eager to help the club and hopefully, bring them to the absolute top level. Like I said, you never know, that would be interesting. It's all about owners, it's all about technical directors, it's all about coaches that step in, who do they want as assistant coaches. That's how it goes."

Stam, who parted ways with MLS club FC Cincinnati last September, represented Man United between 1998 and 2001, winning three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the Champions League during his time at the club.
