Ajax technical director Gerry Hamstra admits that the Amsterdam giants did "everything" they could to keep Manchester United manager-elect Erik ten Hag.

Ajax technical manager Gerry Hamstra has admitted that the club did "everything" they could to convince Erik ten Hag to rebuff interest from Manchester United.

The Dutchman is set to take the reins at Old Trafford from the 2022-23 season onwards and is believed to have agreed on a four-year deal with the 20-time English champions.

Ten Hag has spent four and a half years in charge of Ajax and has guided the team to two Eredivisie titles in that time, as well as the 2018-19 Champions League semi-finals.

Hamstra has insisted that there is still the possibility of Ten Hag staying on at the club, though, telling ESPN: "We hope he stays. We have to stick with the facts, he has not left yet.

"There is interest for Erik ten Hag, that is normal. He has done fantastic. We did everything possible [to keep him at Ajax]. We were very busy with that.

"He reacted that he is focusing on Ajax now. We are preparing for two scenarios: Ten Hag might stay or might leave."

Ten Hag has won 156 of his 210 matches in charge of the Amsterdam giants but witnessed his side go down 2-1 to PSV Eindhoven in the final of this season's KNVB Beker.
