Today marks five years since perennial EFL Cup winners Manchester City were last eliminated in the competition, losing 1-0 against crosstown rivals Manchester United in the fourth round.

The Citizens have taken this competition by the scruff of the neck since the arrival of Pep Guardiola in 2016, lifting the trophy five times in the last six years.

Guardiola has only lost twice in the EFL Cup during his managerial career in England, including the slender loss at Old Trafford in October 2016 against Jose Mourinho's United side.

After a goalless first half, the deadlock was broken in the 54th minute when Zlatan Ibrahimovic drove into the penalty area before cutting the ball back to Juan Mata, who placed his left-footed strike beyond goalkeeper Willy Caballero into the bottom-left corner.

United went on to win the competition that season, while City were sent packing as early as the fourth round for the first time since 2014.

Man City have since gone on to win 23 matches, including their most recent 6-1 thrashing of Wycombe Wanderers in the third round of this season's competition.

Guardiola's men will be looking to extend this impressive run with a victory against West Ham United in the fourth round on Wednesday night at the London Stadium.

Manchester United lineup:
De Gea; Valencia, Rojo, Blind, Shaw; Carrick, Pogba, Herrera; Mata [Schneiderlin 73], Ibrahimovic, Rashford [Lingard 82]

Manchester City lineup:
Caballero; Maffeo, Otamendi, Kompany [Kolarov 45], Clichy; Fernando, A. Garcia; Navas, Nolito [Aguero 71], Sane [Sterling 63]; Iheneacho
