Hungary move to the brink of reaching the UEFA Nations League semi-finals as Adam Szalai scores a stunning goal to hand them a 1-0 win over Germany in Leipzig.

A stunning goal from Adam Szalai earned Hungary a 1-0 win over Germany in Leipzig this evening as Marco Rossi's side took a step closer to qualifying for the UEFA Nations League semi-finals.

Szalai somehow produced an outrageous first-time flick from a corner to send the ball looping over goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen and into the net after just 17 minutes of the contest at the Red Bull Arena.

Hosts Germany could not respond as they saw their hopes of qualifying for the knockout rounds of the Nations League ended, while the result - coupled with Italy's win over England - means that the Three Lions have been relegated from Group A.

Hungary, meanwhile, continue to upset the odds and now sit two points clear of Italy at the top of the group ahead of their final game of the campaign at home to the European champions in Budapest next week.

Having begun the daunting group as rank outsiders, Hungary now know that avoiding defeat in their final game would be enough to see them through to the semi-finals ahead of Italy, Germany and England having won three and lost just one of their five outings so far.

The Magyars have already beaten England home and away in this Nations League campaign - including a 4-0 hammering of Gareth Southgate's side at Molineux last time out - and can now add Germany's significant scalp to their collection.

Szalai's moment of magic was worthy of winning any game and handing Hungary their first competitive win over Germany since the 1954 World Cup, when a legendary side including the likes of Ferenc Puskas, Sandor Kocsis and Nandor Hidegkuti ran out 8-3 victors in the group stages before incredibly losing the final to the same opposition.

The result leaves Die Mannschaft third in the group and now unable to catch their conquerors at the top, with Hansi Flick's side next taking on relegated England in a dead-rubber to conclude their Nations League campaign.

Germany have now won just one of their last six games, and have only two more matches scheduled before this winter's World Cup.

Hungary, meanwhile, failed to qualify for the World Cup and will have their full focus on continuing their dream Nations League run having so far tamed the supposed Group of Death.
