Chelsea have suffered a fresh blow in their bid to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens for the Club World Cup.
The Blues were keen to sign Gittens before the first instalment of the summer transfer window slammed shut at 7pm on Tuesday.
However, Chelsea failed with a €50m (£42m) bid on deadline day, with Dortmund demanding €65m (£55m) to sanction Gittens' departure.
As a result, Enzo Maresca's side ultimately failed in their quest to recruit Gittens before the start of the Club World Cup.
The Blues are expected to reignite their pursuit when the summer transfer window reopens for business on June 16.

Chelsea suffer Gittens transfer blow
Teams competing at the Club World Cup will be able to register new players after the tournament has got underway.
While that rule could have given Chelsea hope, they have now learnt that they will not be able to use Gittens at the tournament even if they agree a deal when the market reopens.
Borussia Dortmund have included Gittens as part of their squad, but as per football.london, FIFA rules state a player cannot be registered for two different clubs during the same tournament.
The German club have also named new signing Jobe Bellingham in their travelling party after the youngster pulled out of the England squad for the European Under-21 Championships.

Gittens shows frustration
Gittens could still join Chelsea this summer, but he has clearly been left frustrated with the failure to get the move done in time for the Club World Cup.
A local Dortmund reporter, Kevin Pinnow, filmed the player speeding away from the club's training ground following the latest developments.
With Gittens likely to leave Dortmund this summer, it seems unlikely that he will play any major role in the Club World Cup group stages.
The German side will face Fluminense, Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan HD in Group F, while Chelsea will go up against Los Angeles FC, Flamengo and Esperance de Tunis in their group.
