Marc Cucurella hopes that the Chelsea hierarchy remain patient with head coach Graham Potter after a poor run of form before the World Cup break.

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has acknowledged that he would like to see Graham Potter remain as head coach on a long-term basis.

In September, the Blues hierarchy moved to replace Thomas Tuchel with the Englishman, tempting him to leave Brighton & Hove Albion for Stamford Bridge.

While Potter initially begun his reign with a nine-match unbeaten streak, he witnessed his side lose four of their five games before the World Cup break.

As a result, Chelsea now sit in eighth position in the Premier League table, eight points adrift of the top four, as well as being eliminated from the EFL Cup.

Despite Potter's team selection having been impacted by injuries to key players, uncertainty remains over his future at the West Londoners.

However, Potter has support from Cucurella, a player who he signed for Brighton in 2021 and has since reunited with after the Spaniard moved to Chelsea in the weeks before his appointment.

Speaking to The Sun, the left-sided defender feels that Chelsea will only improve if Potter is provided with the time to get across his ideas to the squad.

The 24-year-old said: "We have big players to do his ideas. I was really happy at Brighton with him and now he has come here and I think it is good for me and the rest of the team. He is a good coach because his idea of football is attacking.

"All of it is a process. The first season with Graham in Brighton the results were not good, they stayed down in the table. They continued with the same ideas, working, working and working. Then, last season and this season they played really good with the same ideas.

"We need to work and understand his ideas and the results will arrive. It is difficult because it is a new coach with different ideas and it is difficult to change without the time to train."

Chelsea return to competitive action on December 27 when they play host to Bournemouth in the Premier League, a game which is followed by a trip to Nottingham Forest on New Year's Day.

Potter then faces the test of playing Manchester City twice in the space of three days, the first fixture taking place in the top flight at Stamford Bridge before an FA Cup third-round tie at the Etihad Stadium.

Chelsea are expected to be active in the upcoming transfer window with Armando Broja having sustained a season-ending knee injury in a friendly with Aston Villa on Sunday.
