Argentina vs. Colombia: Head-to-head record and past meetings

Ahead of Monday's Copa America final between Argentina and Colombia, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two nations.

Hard Rock Stadium in Florida will stage the 2024 Copa America final between defending champions Argentina and Colombia on Monday.

Lionel Scaloni's men secured a 2-0 victory over tournament debutants Canada in the semi-finals, while Nestor Lorenzo's side battled their way to a slender 1-0 win with 10 men against Uruguay in their last-four contest.

Separated by 11 places in the current FIFA World Rankings, Argentina and Colombia have butted heads in many memorable meetings in multiple competitions over the years.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two nations.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 43
Argentina wins: 26
Draws: 8
Colombia wins: 9

Argentina and Colombia have played each other a total of 43 times across all competitive and non-competitive fixtures. While La Albiceleste have come out on top 26 times, Los Cafeteros have registered just nine victories, with the remaining eight games all ending as a draw.

The very first meeting between these two South American nations took place back in February 1945 when Argentina claimed an emphatic 9-1 victory over Colombia at the Copa America (then called the South American Championship).

Including that result, Argentina won nine of their first 10 meetings with Colombia by an aggregate score of 40-9, with Los Cafeteros' only triumph during this run being a narrow 1-0 friendly win in August 1984.

Colombia beat Argentina 2-1 in the 1987 Copa America third-place playoff, but La Albiceleste got their revenge four years later and beat Los Cafeteros by the same scoreline en route to winning the 1991 title.

Argentina suffered their second-heaviest defeat in history when they were surprisingly put to the sword 5-0 by Colombia in 1994 World Cup qualifying, with their six-year unbeaten streak brought to an end in remarkable fashion.

Colombia lost only one of six encounters with Argentina between 1993 and 1999, but La Albiceleste have since dominated this fixture since the turn of the millennium, winning 13 and drawing five of the last 21 meetings in all competitions.

Since 2007, Argentina have prevailed in seven of the last 12 meetings with Colombia, who have only won once in that time - a 2-0 group-stage victory at the 2019 Copa America courtesy of goals from Roger Martinez and Duvan Zapata.

Argentina and Colombia last locked horns at the Copa America in the 2021 semi-finals; Luis Diaz cancelled out an early opener from Lautaro Martinez to rescue a 1-1 draw and send the tie to penalties, but Scaloni's side won 3-2 in the shootout before beating Brazil 1-0 in the final to win a record-equalling 15th Copa America title.
