Otmar Szafnauer, former team principal at Alpine and Aston Martin, has unveiled his ambition to spearhead the creation of a 12th Formula 1 team, expanding the grid to its maximum capacity.
With Cadillac poised to join as F1's 11th team in 2026, Szafnauer, speaking at the Fuelling the City's Global Spotlight event in Miami last week, outlined his vision to Auto Hebdo. "Before I arrived in Formula 1 with BAR, there were even more teams than that—back when there was pre-qualifying," he said.
"So if a twelfth team materialises, I want to be ready to be the successful candidate," added the 60-year-old.
Szafnauer argued that a 12-team grid would enhance the sport, stating, "There's definitely enough room for 12 teams, and I think 24 cars is better than 22. There's definitely room—physical space—and if those 12 teams can all be competitive, it's much better with 24 drivers."
While Liberty Media and the existing 10 teams long resisted grid expansion, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem championed the addition of an 11th team and has indicated openness to a 12th.
Szafnauer anticipates strong competition for the slot, saying, "I imagine that when the call for tenders for this 12th team is launched, several applications will be submitted. So I want to be sure that my application will be the best of those."
By 2041, Kimi Antonelli will be 35, while Fernando Alonso will celebrate his 60th birthday.
