Carlos Sainz Sr, the renowned rally champion and father of Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz Jr, has revealed he is "seriously" contemplating a run for the presidency of the FIA, the sport's governing body.
With current and controversial FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem facing elections in December, speculation about potential candidates has intensified.
While Susie Wolff, wife of Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, was recently mentioned as a contender but ruled out due to conflict of interest concerns, Sainz Sr's interest has emerged despite his son's role as a Williams driver and co-director of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association.
Speaking to Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, the 63-year-old confirmed he has been approached about the position.
"The world of motorsport has been and continues to be my life," Sainz Sr said.
"It has given me everything and I think this would be a magnificent way of giving back part of what I have received. I think it could be the right time in my professional career to take this step, and that is why I am seriously considering it."
