Turkey keep last-16 hopes alive with win over Czech Republic

Turkey remain in the hunt for a last-16 spot at Euro 2016 with a 2-0 victory over Czech Republic in Lens.

Goals from Burak Yilmaz and Ozan Tufan have earned Turkey a 2-0 victory over Czech Republic, a result which keeps Fatih Terim's side in the hunt for a last-16 place at Euro 2016.

Both teams went into the contest at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis requiring victory to have a chance of progressing through to the last 16, and it was Czech Republic who showed the greater urgency during the opening stages.

However, with just 10 minutes gone, they were caught on the break as Arda Turan released Emre Mor down the right flank and after the teenager showed patience in waiting for the run of Yilmaz, he found his teammate who sent the ball into the top corner from eight yards.

Czech Republic needed a response to falling behind against the run of play and they almost found one when Tomas Sivok rose above the Turkish defence, only to see his thumping header strike the woodwork and rebound clear.

Shortly after the midway point of the first half, Czech Republic created two chances in quick succession but they could not find a way past Volkan Babacan, who saved from Pavel Kaderabek at the near post before Tomas Necid volleyed over from close range.

Turkey continued to keep players back in their own half and it only invited pressure from Czech Republic, who saw Babacan pull off another save from a 25-yard effort from Jaroslav Plasil.

Czech Republic needed to start positively after the restart although Turkey almost doubled their advantage after a blistering run from Mor but after he had travelled with the ball to the other side of the penalty area, he fired just over from 12 yards.

However, midway through the second half, Turkey did have their second after a finish from Tufan, who lashed the ball into the top corner from 12 yards after being teed up by Mehmet Topal.

Turkey were aware that winning by a wide margin would strengthen their hopes of a last-16 place but they were unable to add a third through Turan, who headed over after being found from the right flank by Gokhan Gonul.

With seven minutes remaining, Olcay Sahan blazed wide when he should have at least hit the target before Cenk Tosun dragged a shot to the right of the post from 20 yards in what proved to be Turkey's final chance.
