Despite ending the regular season in the Championship on a five-game losing streak, Sunderland secured their place in the playoffs with a comfortable fourth-placed finish.
Sunderland’s dramatic playoff run was defined by their knack for late goals, with a stoppage-time winner in the first leg and a 122nd-minute equaliser in the return leg helping them edge past Coventry City in the semi-finals - that was followed by Tommy Watson’s 95th-minute strike to secure a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United in the final.
The win marked Sunderland’s long-awaited return to the Premier League, ending an eight-year absence since their relegation in 2017. However, manager Regis Le Bris knows that staying in the top flight will pose a far greater challenge considering the strength of the teams that are present at that level.
Sunderland have smashed their transfer record this summer by signing Habib Diarra from Strasbourg for £30m, while Enzo Le Fee has made the switch to the club on a permanent basis.
Simon Adingra's move from Brighton & Hove Albion is also eye-catching, as a number of bigger clubs were believed to be closely monitoring his situation after some standout displays at the Amex.
Sunderland have not been afraid to spend this summer, and more incomings are expected before the end of the summer market.
However, the Black Cats have sold Jude Bellingham and Tommy Watson this summer, with the pair bringing in almost £40m in transfer fees between them.
Sunderland are currently working towards the start of their 2025-26 Premier League campaign, with their opening match coming against West Ham United on August 16.
The Black Cats will also take on Burnley and Brentford in the latter stages of August, before opening September with an away fixture against Crystal Palace.
