Result: Netherlands beat Poland in Gdansk

Newcastle United midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum scores the winner as Netherlands record a 2-1 win over Poland in an international friendly.

Netherlands have recorded a 2-1 win against Poland in Wednesday night's international friendly in Gdansk.

Danny Blind's side, who have not qualified for Euro 2016, took a 33rd-minute lead through Vincent Janssen, but a bullet header from Artur Jedrzejczyk on the hour drew Poland level on home soil.

There was to be one more goal, however, and it came from Newcastle United midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, who found the top corner 14 minutes from time to secure an impressive victory for the Dutch.

The game's first shot on target came in the fifth minute when Steven Berghuis lined up a free kick some 20 yards from goal, but it was a fairly routine save for Poland number one Wojciech Szczesny.

Less than two minutes later, Poland had a chance to make the breakthrough when Arkadiusz Milik met a loose ball inside the box, but his effort smashed against the crossbar before the Dutch managed to scramble clear.

An end-to-end opening 15 minutes continued to produce chances, and Janssen fizzed one just wide of Szczesny's post after good work from Quincy Promes in a wide position.

Poland's next opportunity came just before the half-hour mark when Milik struck a free kick from the edge of the box, but the number seven's effort was just wide of Jasper Cillessen's post.

It was Netherlands that made the breakthrough in the 33rd minute, however, when Janssen headed a Berghuis cross past Sczcesny from close range to net his second international goal.

Janssen might have had his second of the match 10 minutes before the break after again finding space inside the home side's box, but Szczesny was on hand to make a smart one-handed save, before the Arsenal goalkeeper kept out a strike from Berghuis two minutes later.

Lewandowski came close to an equaliser 10 minutes into the second period when he met a low cross from the right, but the Bayern Munich striker fired over the crossbar from close range.

Poland were on terms on the hour mark, however, when Jedrzejczyk's bullet header beat Cillessen from a corner and the number three celebrated by jumping into the home supporters.

Both managers made changes as the second period continued to gather pace, but clear opportunities were at a premium despite the end-to-end nature of the contest.

Virgil van Dijk had a half-chance for Netherlands 15 minutes from time, but the Southampton centre-back's header was over the crossbar.

Netherlands regained the lead in the 76th minute, however, when Wijnaldum spun inside the Poland box before firing an unstoppable effort into the top corner.

Poland, who open their Euro 2016 campaign against Northern Ireland on June 12, had plenty of the ball in the latter stages, but could not find as a leveller as they were beaten on home soil.
