Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho will face a hearing over his failed drugs test on Thursday having tested positive for a fat-burning substance in March.

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho will face a hearing over his failed drugs test on Thursday.

The 26-year-old missed the closing months of Liverpool's campaign, including the Europa League final, after testing positive for a fat-burning substance that was on UEFA's banned list.

A provisional 30-day ban imposed by UEFA saw him also miss out on selection for Euro 2016, despite the suspension not being extended while the governing body conducted their own investigation.

Sakho's lawyers have argued that the substance should not be on UEFA's banned list, and the player will have a chance to plead his innocence to the Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on Thursday.

The France international, who tested positive after a Europa League tie against Manchester United in March, could face a lengthy suspension if UEFA conclude that he breached rules over performance-enhancing substances.
