Following the tragic passing of Diogo Jota at the age of 28, Sports Mole takes a look at some of his greatest Premier League goals for former clubs Wolverhampton Wanderers and Liverpool.

World football is mourning the loss of Diogo Jota, who has tragically passed away at the age of 28 following a car accident in northern Spain.

The Portuguese forward died alongside his younger brother and fellow professional footballer - 25-year-old Andre Silva - in the early hours of the morning on July 3, 2025.

Tributes have poured in for Jota, a talented and prolific goalscorer at club and international level, admired and respected as both a footballer and a person.

Jota began his football journey in English football with Wolverhampton Wanderers, scoring 44 goals in 131 appearances as he fired the club to the Championship title and back-to-back seventh-placed finishes in the Premier League during his memorable three-year stay at Molineux.

His rise to stardom with Wolves caught the attention of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who spent £45m to sign the forward in September 2020, and he went on to score a total of 65 goals in 182 games for the Reds.

Liverpool’s No.20 helped the club win their 20th Premier League title under Arne Slot last season, while he also won two EFL Cup and one FA Cup during his successful five-year career at Anfield.

Jota had a true poacher’s instinct and ice-cool composure in front of goal that made him a lethal finisher, and crucially a match-winner, on many occasions as a Premier League player, netting 63 goals in total across 190 appearances in England’s top division.

Here, Sports Mole takes a look at some of Jota’s greatest Premier League goals during his times at both Wolves and Liverpool.

Wolves 2-0 Cardiff City | March 2019

After scoring 17 goals in his first season for Championship title-winners Wolves, Jota found the net nine times in his debut Premier League campaign, including one strike that capped a stunning team move in a 2-0 home victory for the Old Gold over Cardiff City.

Indeed, his first-half opener in front of the Molineux faithful was a thing of beauty. An intricate passage of play began with defender Willy Boly stepping into midfield before Jota, Morgan Gibbs-White and Raul Jimenez exchanged a brilliant sequence of one-touch passing.

A flick from Gibbs-White and a perfectly-weighted pass from Jimenez allowed Jota to confidently fire a shot from inside the penalty area past goalkeeper Neil Etheridge and into the bottom-left corner.

Jota then turned provider for Jimenez just two minutes later to double Wolves’ advantage, increasing his tally of goal contributions at Molineux to nine (five goals, four assists) across his last seven games at the time.

Everton 1-4 Liverpool | December 2021

Reigning Premier League champions Liverpool had won only one on their previous nine visits to Goodison Park before they delivered a resounding 4-1 victory over Merseyside rivals Everton in December 2021.

Captain Jordan Henderson curled Liverpool into the lead, before Mohamed Salah netted either side of half time to put the Reds in control, and the victory was sealed for Klopp and co 11 minutes from time courtesy of an emphatic strike from Jota.

Operating as a false nine in between Salah and Sadio Mane, Jota made a darting run into the penalty area to receive a pass from Andrew Robertson, and his deft flick allowed him to skip round Everton’s Allan before ramming a left-footed shot into the roof of the net, beating Jordan Pickford at his near post from the tightest of angles.

Liverpool 4-0 Arsenal | November 2021

November 21, 2021 is the date when Jota scored his “favourite” goal in a Liverpool shirt, with his cool second-half finish helping the Reds demolish Arsenal by a 4-0 scoreline in a one-sided affair at Anfield.

“My favourite Liverpool goal was against Arsenal at Anfield, the one [where I dribbled] past a few players including the ‘keeper, “Jota told Liverpool’s media channels. “I think it was a good goal and everyone in the stadium enjoyed it.”

Within five minutes of the restart, Jota expertly punished a costly defensive error from Nuno Tavares, faking a shot and cutting inside to sit Ben White on his backside before fooling goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale with another dummy and rolling the ball into an empty net.

The 2021-22 campaign represented Jota’s most prolific as a Premier League player for Liverpool, with this memorable strike one of 15 that made the net ripple across 35 appearances.

Liverpool 4-3 Tottenham Hotspur | April 2023

Jota produced the decisive moment, scoring arguably his most memorable Premier League goal for Liverpool, in a topsy-turvy 4-3 victory against Tottenham Hotspur towards the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

The Reds raced into a three-goal lead inside the opening quarter of an hour at Anfield before Spurs admirably fought back, with former Everton striker Richarlison restoring parity in second-half stoppage time to put the visitors on the brink of rescuing an unlikely draw.

However, Tottenham’s spirited comeback ultimately counted for nothing, as Jota capitalised on a defensive mix-up just seconds later to win the game for Liverpool in dramatic fashion.

The Portuguese pounced on a loose back-pass from Lucas Moura and showed great composure when it mattered most as he directed a low shot into the far corner past onrushing goalkeeper Fraser Forster, sparking jubilant scenes in the Kop.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton | April 2025

Jota produced another moment of magic in a nervy Merseyside derby last season, scoring what has sadly proved to be his final goal for Liverpool in a slender 1-0 triumph over Everton.

Liverpool’s No.20, who had been gradually working his way back from injury, was on the periphery of the closely-contested battle in which the frustrated Reds struggled to break down the Toffees’ deep backline.

However, Klopp’s men showed why they were champions-elect following Jota's twinkling moment of inspiration just before the hour mark. After collecting a cute backheel from Luis Diaz, Jota dropped the shoulder and waltzed his way through Everton’s defence before drilling a shot beyond Pickford.

Jota’s match-winning goal - his sixth of the 2024-25 campaign - secured Liverpool’s 100th win against Everton across all competitions and helped the Reds climb 12 points clear at the top of the table en route to Premier League glory.
