Roma's sporting director Monchi reveals that the club are no further forward in a deal for Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez.

Roma's sporting director Monchi has admitted that the club have made no further progress in their pursuit of Leicester City's wantaway winger Riyad Mahrez.

The 26-year-old revealed in May that he is keen to leave the Foxes this summer, alerting the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and the Serie A side.

Roma are the only club to have made formal bids to date, however, with Leicester rejecting successive offers of £20m and £32m in the hope of securing a fee closer to £50m.

"In terms of Mahrez, the situation hasn't changed since the last press conference," Monchi told reporters. "I want to make two points. Firstly, a squad like Roma's with players like [Lorenzo] Pellegrini, [Radja] Nainggolan, [Kevin] Strootman, [Edin] Dzeko, [Aleksandr] Kolarov, etc doesn't depend on the right winger who comes in.

"I think the guarantee of the performance of this team is the collective that we have.

"If the first point is conformist then the second is ambitious: Mahrez or not, an important player will arrive who will give his quality to a magnificent squad."

Leicester manager Craig Shakespeare claimed earlier this week that Mahrez's preference is to remain in the Premier League with a top-six side.
