Former England international Alan Shearer says that Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater should have been selected in Roy Hodgson's Euro 2016 squad.

Alan Shearer has said that boss Roy Hodgson has continued England's previous trend of selecting a squad based on reputation rather than form.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater had been left out of the squad despite being introduced to the international fold after playing a prominent role in the Foxes' Premier League title triumph.

Despite their lack of game time, Arsenal's Jack Wilshere and Liverpool's Jordan Henderson have been selected ahead of Drinkwater, and Shearer has indicated that he is disappointed with the make-up of Hodgson's squad for Euro 2016.

The 45-year-old told BBC Radio 5 live: "I think Drinkwater should have been in. He'll be very disappointed, and rightly so because he's been one of the standout players this season."

"He's been absolutely magnificent, and I think once again England have gone for reputation rather than form."

Fabian Delph and Andros Townsend were also left out of the 23-man squad which will travel to France.
