Preview: Dagenham & Redbridge vs. Wrexham - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's National League clash between Dagenham & Redbridge and Wrexham, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Hoping to pull off a National League title heist on the final day, an expectant Wrexham will travel South to face a Dagenham & Redbridge side whose season has limped to an end.

Still mathematically possible to finish inside the playoff spots, Dagenham have passed up numerous opportunities to take control of their own destiny and will now rely on a favour from elsewhere.

For Wrexham, their job remains simple: take three points. As for whether that will be enough to secure promotion to the EFL remains to be seen, as Stockport County still have the title in their own hands.

Stockport's 1-0 victory over Torquay United on Wednesday night meant that the Hatters regained top spot and will lead the title race heading into the final day.

A blistering performance from the Dragons last weekend saw Wrexham leapfrog Stockport at the top of the table, blowing away their title rivals with a confident 3-0 victory.

It meant that Wrexham denied Stockport the chance to secure the title on their own turf, while ensuring the fight for promotion would go down to the final game.

There is a school of thought that believes both of these sides should have already been promoted, as the one automatic spot given to sides in the National League does not fairly reflect the quality of the division.

While that debate will rumble on until an extra promotion space is granted to the fifth tier, Wrexham will be desperate to secure the singular spot this season, but they know the task in front of them will not be easy.

Urged to only travel to the capital if they have a ticket in the away end, the Wrexham supporters know a victory will keep them in contention of a Football League return, having been absent from England's top four tiers for the last 14 years.

One of the longest serving former Football League clubs in the National League, should Wrexham ultimately fall short on the final day, their campaign will carry on beyond the regular season, with promotion still achievable via the playoffs.

Unlike their opponents this weekend, a playoff campaign remains a distant hope for Dagenham, who could have been heading into the final match of the season occupying a top-seven position.

With seventh-placed Chesterfield having lost their previous three fixtures, the opportunity for the Daggers to leapfrog the Derbyshire side in the table had presented itself, yet they were unable to take advantage.

Most recently succumbing to a 3-1 defeat to Solihull Moors, who were forced to play the majority of the match with 10 men, Dagenham will be ruing their missed chances, as it looks like their season will finish on a sour note.

Of course, they could still have a say in the National League title race, with Stockport County no doubt desperate to see the London-based outfit snatch a result, yet their recent record against Wrexham does not offer the hosts much optimism heading into Sunday's clash.

Winless in their previous four league meetings against Wrexham, Dagenham last tasted victory in this fixture all the way back in October 2019.

Wrexham have undergone an immeasurable transformation since and will be hoping to back up their 1-0 victory over Dagenham from earlier in the campaign, with another triumph in the capital this weekend.

Team News

A revelation since he arrived from AFC Wimbledon earlier in the campaign, Ollie Palmer has netted 15 times in 20 league matches for Wrexham this season.

Palmer will be joined up front by strike partner Paul Mullin, whose tally of 26 goals for the season was added to during last weekend's victory over Stockport.

Creative midfielder Jordan Davies will look to provide service for the two goal-machines, while long-throw expert Ben Tozer should provide an unorthodox threat from defence.

Despite their troubles at times, Dagenham have found the net often this season, with Paul McCallum's 17 goals a positive in an otherwise frustrating campaign.

McCallum will be joined in attack by Junior Morias, who recently netted a hat-trick during Dagenham's 7-3 win over Barnet.

Dagenham & Redbridge possible starting lineup:
Justham; Wright, Onariase, Ling; Comley, Johnson, Segaf, Robinson, Vilhete; McCallum, Morias

Wrexham possible starting lineup:
Dibble; Hosannah, French, Tozer; Cleworth, Davies, McFadzean, Young, Jones; Mullin, Palmer

We say: Dagenham & Redbridge 1-3 Wrexham

Wrexham know that they need three points to keep their title hopes alive, while hoping for a Stockport slip-up on the final day.

Expected to keep up their side of the bargain, a free-flowing Wrexham side should have little trouble getting past a less-than convincing Dagenham outfit.
