Preview: Cheltenham Town vs. Lincoln City - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Cheltenham Town and Lincoln City, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Both Cheltenham Town and Lincoln City will be bidding to make it back-to-back victories in League One when they lock horns in Gloucestershire on Tuesday night.

The home side will enter the contest off the back of a 1-0 win over Fleetwood Town, while Lincoln beat Oxford United by the same scoreline in their last match.

Match preview

Cheltenham ended a four-game losing run on Saturday when they beat Fleetwood, with Alfie May scoring the only goal of the contest in the 56th minute to secure a huge three points.

The result moved Wade Elliott's side into 18th position in the table, four points clear of the relegation zone heading into the final months of the campaign.

Cheltenham were League Two champions in 2020-21 to return to the third tier, and they finished 15th in League One last season, so any spot over 21st would be a huge positive this term.

The Robins actually have one of the poorer home records in the league this season, picking up 21 points from 16 matches, and they have not beaten Lincoln in any competition since October 2017.

Earlier this season, Lincoln recorded a 3-0 victory in the reverse league fixture, while the points were shared in a 2-2 draw when the two sides locked horns in Gloucestershire last season.

Lincoln, meanwhile, will enter this match off the back of a 1-0 victory over Oxford United on Saturday afternoon, with Daniel Mandroiu netting the winner from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute.

The Imps are now unbeaten in all competitions since January 10, while their last league defeat was at Charlton Athletic on January 7, which is a run of nine matches without a loss in the third tier.

Lincoln have been the draw specialists during that run, though, sharing the points on six occasions, which has prevented them from pushing towards the playoff positions.

As it stands, Mark Kennedy's side are 11th in the table, some 16 points behind sixth-placed Barnsley, so it would take a monumental effort to make the playoffs at this stage of the campaign.

Lincoln have had mixed results on their travels in the league this season, picking up 19 points from 16 matches courtesy of a record of five wins, four draws and seven defeats.

Team News

Cheltenham have no fresh injury concerns from their one-goal success over Fleetwood on Saturday, so it could be a case of same again from head coach Elliott in terms of team selection.

May netted his 10th league goal of the campaign last weekend and will continue in the final third, and he should again be partnered by Aidan Keena.

Elliott is again expected to select a back five for this match, with Ryan Broom given licence to join Keena and May in the final third of the field.

As for Lincoln, head coach Kennedy is unlikely to find a reason to alter a winning side, so the visitors could also be unchanged for the contest on Tuesday night.

Ben House has scored eight league goals this term and is again set to operate in the final third of the field, while Mandroiu will be bidding to add to the five league goals that he has managed this term.

It would not be a shock to see Jack Diamond come in for a start in this match, though, with the 23-year-old featuring as a second-half substitute against Oxford United.

Cheltenham Town possible starting lineup:
Southwood; Jackson, Long, Taylor, Raglan, Ferry; Sercombe, Bonds; Broom; Keena, May

Lincoln City possible starting lineup:
Rushworth; Montsma, O'Connor, Poole; Sorensen, Bishop, Erhahon, Roughan; Shodipo, House, Mandroiu

We say: Cheltenham Town 1-1 Lincoln City

Lincoln have drawn 17 times in the league this season, which is comfortably the most in League One, and we are backing that to become 18 on Tuesday night. Cheltenham's confidence will have been boosted by their success over Fleetwood, and the home side should have enough to avoid defeat in this match.
